This McKinsey piece is about how the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has disrupted centuries of inertia and reinvented itself — renvisioned is perhaps a better word — in one massive project. McKinsey observes that the museum is a ‘microcosm’ of a typical enterprise along with the belief that “issues” will yield to similar approaches, in this case agile principles. While the agile approach seems to have been inadvertent it worked well. What is striking is how the value of their collections was amplified by the transformation of siloed ‘incoherent’ collections of stuff into a magnificent integrated narrative of the history of the Netherlands. One that can embrace the future with ease. This holistic approach is contrasted with the vulnerabilities of current corporate business practices and processes, silos, and the lack of functional cross-disciplinary teams. You will be impressed by not only the outcomes the Rijks Museum achieved but the broad applicability this approach promises to enterprises in totally unrelated fields. Agile change is one of the golden keys to surviving disruption.
