Accidentally agile: An interview with the Rijksmuseum’s Taco Dibbits

This McKinsey piece is about how the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has disrupted centuries of inertia and reinvented itself — renvisioned is perhaps a better word — in one massive project. McKinsey observes that the museum is a ‘microcosm’ of a typical enterprise along with the belief that “issues” will yield to similar approaches, in this case agile principles. While the agile approach seems to have been inadvertent it worked well.  What is striking is how the value of their collections was amplified by the transformation of siloed ‘incoherent’ collections of stuff into a magnificent integrated narrative of the history of the Netherlands. One that can embrace the future with ease. This holistic approach is contrasted with the vulnerabilities of current corporate business practices and processes, silos, and the lack of  functional cross-disciplinary teams. You will be impressed by not only the outcomes the Rijks Museum achieved but the broad applicability this approach promises to enterprises in totally unrelated fields. Agile change is one of the golden keys to surviving disruption.

This exploit was methodically executed over a period of years resulting in the worst supply-chain cyber crime in history.

Spend some time with the very well written Bloomberg piece -- kudos to Bloomberg, they actually make IT rogue behavior interesting -- and consider the ramifications to today's environment. The clarion call is clear -- if we continue to deny and delay the realities of cyber risk the result will be horrible beyond our nightmares. Result: a great thought piece.

The sheer audacity and magnitude of this exploit is impressive -- but not in a good way! If nothing else, this high level risk should alert the C-Suite and Board that it could be a costly error to assume your enterprise is not currently breached. Increase situational awareness at the Board level.
